Why Use Propane?

On a U.S. nationwide average, propane costs less than electricity on a per-BTU basis. According to a U.S. Department of Energy study, electricity is nearly twice as costly as propane.

In Cayman, electricity is three times more expensive than propane. This means it could cost you over twice as much to operate your water heater, clothes dryer, or range with electricity than with propane from Clean Gas.

Homes supplied with propane have a better resale value and rent faster. On average, they cost less to run than homes with all-electric appliances. Homeowners selling or trying to rent their homes realize sales twice as fast, and property owners have on average longer renters because of the significant savings in using propane-powered appliance such as dryers, ranges, water heaters and generators.

For example, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that propane water heaters save at least $175 annually compared to electric water heaters and heat 2½ times the water with the same amount of energy. With the advent of the new combined heat and power units (CHP), propane can save you money by heating water and creating more efficient electricity at the same time.

Advantages Of Using Propane

Discover the Many Benefits and Advantages of Choosing Propane for Your Energy Needs

Affordable

Lower utility costs, make your home more comfortable and reduce your impact on the environment. On average, propane costs less than half as much per BTU as electricity and propane gas appliances cost 30 to 60 percent less per hour of operation than do electrical appliances.

Reliable

Unlike other energy sources, propane is not affected by power outages, making it a dependable choice for heating, cooking, and powering appliances. With proper storage and handling, propane can be stored for long periods without degradation, ensuring a steady supply when you need it most. Its versatility allows it to be used in a variety of applications, from residential heating to industrial processes, further enhancing its reliability across different sectors.

Efficient

Propane is a standout in efficiency, with propane appliances often boasting efficiency levels exceeding 90%. This means you can achieve more heat or power from every unit of fuel, resulting in significant cost savings. Studies have shown that propane furnaces can be up to 20% more efficient than electric furnaces, while propane water heaters can recover hot water nearly 40% faster than electric models.

Environmentally Friendly

It burns cleaner than many other fossil fuels, emitting fewer harmful greenhouse gases and pollutants into the atmosphere. With lower levels of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide compared to alternatives like coal or oil, propane helps reduce your carbon footprint and supports cleaner air quality. Additionally, propane is non-toxic and insoluble in water, minimizing environmental risks in case of spills or leaks.

Propane Versus Electric

Propane vs electric energy sources offer distinct advantages and considerations. Understanding the differences between these options can help you make an informed decision

Water Heaters

Propane water heaters provide more hot water than electric water heaters because they recover 2 ½ times faster and they cost about 30% less to operate. Also, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that propane water heaters save at least $175 annually compared to electric water heaters (All savings noted are U.S. Savings are substantially more using Cayman data).

Production

The pollution created from burning propane is far less than that created by the diesel power plants currently supplying you with electricity. By using propane, you help protect the environment by contributing to cleaner, more breathable air.

Aesthetic Lighting

Propane gas can be used for aesthetic lighting such as tiki torches, fire pits, and accent lighting, all the while using less energy than the electrical counter parts.

Cooking

Most cooks and professional chefs prefer cooking with gas. A new propane cook top or range costs one-third less than cooking with an electric range. Propane delivers faster cooking times, more accurate cooking temperature and distributes heat more evenly.

Propane Safety

As a general rule, when in doubt, call us. Here are some general guidelines on what NOT to do, to make sure you’re using your propane safely!

AVOID use outdoor propane appliances (including portable heaters, grills, and generators) indoors or in enclosed areas. This could result in carbon monoxide poisoning, extreme danger, or even death. Only use appliances that are designed and approved for indoor use.

AVOID store or place a propane cylinder indoors or in an enclosed area such as a basement, garage, shed, or tent. It is illegal and highly unsafe to store propane tanks indoors.

AVOID try to modify or repair valves, regulators, or other appliance parts.

AVOID turn on a light switch, use any power source, or inspect your household appliances while standing in water. This can result in electrocution.

AVOID store combustible materials near appliances.

ONLY inspect your propane appliances for water or other damage if it is safe to do so. If the appliances have electric components and have been exposed to water, they can create a fire hazard.
