Propane vs Natural Gas vs Electricity: What's the difference?
Ever wondered what the difference is between natural gas and propane? It’s pretty simple when you break it down; propane is more energy-efficient and considered to be a green fuel, natural gas is not. Natural gas is delivered to houses via gas pipelines, while propane is delivered in propane tanks. Let’s go into more detail about the differences:
1. Efficiency
Propane is a more efficient source of energy as it delivers more than twice the energy of natural gas and nine times more that electricity. To put it simply, propane will produce the same amount of energy using half the amount of fuel and one ninth the amount of electricity. If you’re looking to save on energy costs, propane is the better option in the Cayman Islands.
2. Clean
Propane is considered a green fuel whereas natural gas is not. While both are clean burning, propane is eco-friendly both before and after combustion. Propane is not a CFC or HFC and better for the environment and won’t hurt the ozone if released into the atmosphere. Natural gas is made up of mainly methane so when leaked into the environment it is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gases and ozone depletion.
3. Delivery
The delivery method of propane and natural gas are very different. Propane is stored in a tank on your property and delivered by a truck whereas natural gas is delivered through a pipeline. Gas stored in a tank on your property gives you a more independent and secure supply, whereas piped gas can be damaged during a storm and customers can have widespread outages.
